I am a resolute community leader running for Madison Common Council, District 7, with a vision to build a more sustainable, and thriving community. As an immigrant, a professional, and a longtime resident of Madison for more than 35 years, I bring a unique perspective and a deep commitment to addressing the challenges facing District 7 and the city.

 

I have proudly called District 7 home for the past 27 years, building a life within this community. I am deeply grateful for the support of my wife, Nasra Wehelie—who currently serves as the Madison Common Council District 7 Alder—and our accomplished children, whose achievements continue to inspire me.

Professionally, I hold a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) From Somali National University, a master’s degree in animal science from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois, and an Executive Master of Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison where my wife and our four children also proudly attended.

• Information Technology - Experience in information technology and business, specializing in project and program management, process improvement, and strategic planning.

• Immigrant & Advocate – Having navigated the challenges of being an immigrant from Somalia, I understand the importance of representation and opportunity for all communities.

• Economic Development – With a background in business, I have worked to support Minority businesses and helped promote employment opportunities and create pathways to economic opportunity.

 

Life has shaped me into an eternal optimist who believes in the power of opportunity and access. I understand the challenges of navigating a pristine environment and the importance of community support. I've also mentored youth and guided them through the process of applying to universities, many of whom are now doctors and lawyers serving their communities.

 

I am running for the District 7 Alder for the Madison Common Council to amplify the voices of our district and work toward solutions that benefit everyone. With a steadfast commitment to opportunity and sustainability, I am eager to continue serving the community I have been proud to call home for over three decades. 

 

Strong leadership is about listening and bringing people together to solve pressing community issues. My campaign is about building a Madison that works for everyone—where families can thrive, businesses can grow, and communities can feel safe and supported.
